Documentary comparison with news article

There are a lot of differences between documentaries and news article the main one is that you can edit at a much larger scale within a documentary, as it is a production and you can add music cuts and everything you would use within a moving image project. A news article is normally live and is straight to the point with no cuts or edits and also there is only one side to the argument, as it is a reporter reviewing the story and saying the facts of the matter. A documentary can also include fiction with ease, as in a news report it would be unwise and frowned upon.

I will compare my own video documentary, which is about what people keep inside of their handbags. I will use this example as I created it and know exactly what I did to film and edit the footage.

In this documentary we recorded raw footage of interviewing people as I used a z5 to film the face and reaction as a normal interview my colleague Oliver lee used a Nikon D5000 to catch the hand movements and the items within the bag. I then edit both of the footage together to create the documentary, with live news shoot you don’t have this option and you have to stick with the one shot or sometimes can use multi live camera but that is rare. This is a news article I have chosen for my comparison with my own documentary.

This shows a selection of simple camera shots a live interview and keeps the watcher focused on what’s happening there is some edits showing different clips whilst you can still hear the audio within the background. Also the difference with a documentary and a news report is that is normally based on one specific subject and report. For example if it’s a pre done report then they can do in camera edits by showing different shots through out the interview or report so that the viewer does not lose interest.
